Known for writing openly about her relationships, Taylor Swift doesn’t shy away from sharing every detail in her music. So, when one song on her album Speak Now sounded familiar to Owl City’s Adam Young he deciphered Taylor’s clues to learn the song was penned for him. Adam filled CBS Local in on how he discovered “Enchanted” was directed at him.

“I bought Taylor’s record when it came out at midnight,” Adam recalled. “She always hides secret messages in her lyrics and I went through them all and I added them all up and one of the songs had my first name in it.”

The two had exchanged emails in the past and one of the words he used in a message struck a chord.

“['Enchanted'] had my favorite word that I remember her commenting on. We had sent emails back and forth and I had mentioned the word wonderstruck. I remember her saying, ‘That’s a cool word! Not many people use that.’”

In the song, Taylor sings, “This night is sparkling, don’t you let it go/I’m wonderstruck, blushing all the way home/I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew I was enchanted to meet you.”

Once he deciphered his name written in the lyrics, Adam played the song back.

“She deals with life by writing music. That’s how she processes life and so do I,” he said. “To have myself be part of someone’s way of dealing is an honor. It’s a beautiful song too.”

So what did Adam do in return? He wrote his own version of “Enchanted” as a Valentine’s Day gift to Taylor.

“I felt like a song like that needed a response from me because it was so personal and so directed at me,” he said. “I wanted to sing it back to her and flip a few words around. It felt like the right thing to do. Valentine’s Day was coming up and I’m not particularly romantic but it kind of happened that way. I kind of feel like my romantic level went up a few percent.”

Adam posted his version of the song on his website with a note to the country songstress.

“I’ll be the first to admit I’m a rather shy boy and since music is the most eloquent form of communication I can muster, I decided to record something for you — as sort of a “reply” to the breathtaking song on your current record. This is what I wanted so badly to tell you in person but could never quite put into words,” he wrote.

“Everything about you is lovely. You’re an immensely charming girl with a beautiful heart and more grace and elegance than I know how to describe. You are a true princess from a dreamy fairy tale, and above all, I just want you to know…. I was enchanted to meet you too.”

Unfortunately fairy tales don’t always develop as they should in real life and Adam confessed that Taylor never responded to his song.

“But that’s cool. She’s busy. I’m good,” he said. “She’s a sweet girl.”

Owl City’s upcoming album The Midsummer Station will be released August 21. Whether or not he has penned any additional tracks for Taylor Swift will be up to the listener to decipher.
