Demi Lovato: Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ is ‘About Tearing Katy Perry Down’

"I don't see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body," Lovato says.

On the surface, Taylor Swift’s video for “Bad Blood” is a star-studded lineup of her model, musician, and actress friends — a gutsy assemblage of female superheroes hellbent on destroying a Swift (“Catastrophe”) rival played by Selena Gomez. The song (and its accompanying video) was widely interpreted as a Katy Perry diss, reigniting their longstanding feud and leading some to wonder whether a “squad” is just a “clique” by any other name.

Demi Lovato, who is not featured in the clip or implicated in the Swift-Perry feud, weighed in on the song’s message this week — 19 months after the Joseph Kahn video debuted.

“This will probably get me in trouble, but I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body,” she said in an interview with Yahoo. “It’s kind of this false image of what people should look like,” Lovato confessed. “I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s empowerment.”

Whatever you think about “Bad Blood,” that Demi Lovato character sure isn’t afraid to speak her truth.
